Building Towards ‘World’s Best Radio’ in Australia
We are now just six months away from one of the most significant milestones in Australian broadcasting history – the arrival of digital radio in early 2009. As you’ll see in this eNewsletter, contracts have been awarded to successful tenders and we are now, literally, building towards a new era.

The industry is right behind this launch and are working hard to develop new and exciting content to give listeners a great experience on digital. The industry is about to sign off on its marketing and communications strategy – and we will be using trade and consumer channels, including the airwaves to raise awareness and interest about digital radio when the time is right. This is one of the most comprehensive launches of digital radio in the world and many retailers, receiver manufacturers, car companies are supporting the broadcasters to make it a huge success.

Digital broadcasting will transform what it means to broadcast, advertise on, and listen to the radio
. Commercial Radio Australia is bringing together broadcasters, manufacturers, retailers and advertisers to ensure all stakeholders are well-prepared as we approach launch. It’s an exciting time and the level of interest and media coverage is building. This rise in interest also brings out the predictable array of cynics and an amount of poorly informed comment, so make sure you get the facts straight.

To help you see what’s really happening, you’ll find a useful selection of press clippings with this eNewsletter.

Building a new era in Australian radio
Successful tenders have been announced for the equipment and infrastructure that will deliver ‘World Best’ multi-media radio to millions of Australians.
Contracts have been awarded to:
> Rohde & Schwarz (high power DAB+ transmitters)
> Factum (DAB+ Multiplexers & coders)
> The United Group (systems integration services & pre-build)
> Kordia (project management support)

These companies will be working to the deadlines that will deliver DAB+ broadcasts in early ’09.

What’s Really Happening in Digital – A Quick Snapshot
It’s all systems go for early 2009! Don’t be distracted by the doomsayers and the misinformed! Keep up-to-date on what’s really happening, by checking out this recent selection of press clippings. Read all about it here.

Ad Agencies Helping Develop New Opportunities
Australia’s leading advertising agencies and radio stations have joined forces to provide advice and guidance for the industry about the introduction and implementation of digital radio, scheduled for early next year. Click here to find out more.

‘Worldwide Digital – Breaking Down The Format Barriers’
The world’s leading manufacturer of radio silicon chips has announced a ‘universal’ module, enabling digital radios to function across the various digital formats used in different countries. At the moment for example, radios purchased in the UK won’t necessarily work in Australia – due to our use of the more recently developed DAB+ format. However, those barriers are now being broken down at the manufacturing stage.

The new multi-function chip will reduce market-by-market cost issues for many manufacturers whose radios will now work across a range of formats used by different countries. Click here to see the announcement.

So who’s going DAB+ first?
As per the relevant federal legislation, DAB+ will be launching in Australia’s major state capitals in early 2009 with other cities and regional areas to follow later.

Digital Logo To Be Revealed
An easily recognisable digital radio logo and tagline to be used in Australia will soon be revealed. Various countries around the world have different ‘consumer branding’ for digital radio, and a special event for trade will be in September to unveil the Aussie approach.
