Townsville radio survey released

Results from the first 2015 all of industry radio ratings survey in Townsville will be released today after the introduction of a new initiative which has enabled a more cost effective audience measurement system for radio broadcasters outside of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Gold Coast, Canberra and Newcastle markets.

Zinc 100.7, 106.3 FM, 103.1 Hot FM, 102.3 4TO FM and the ABC have all been part of the 2015 radio audience research conducted by Xtra Research, which involved more than 1,200 respondents between 19 October - 7 November 2015.

“This is the first radio survey for Townsville in 12 years, so the results will provide valuable information on radio audiences for both stations and advertisers,” said Joan Warner, CEO of Commercial Radio Australia, the peak industry body.

The last radio survey in Townsville was conducted in 2003 by Nielsen Media. Commercial Radio Australia announced last year it would enable more regular and cost-effective research into regional radio through the introduction of a new protocol for regional licence areas outside the main GfK Radio Audience Measurement contract.

Under the new system, regional radio stations can currently commission one of four approved ratings survey contractors in conjunction with other commercial and public broadcasters in their licence area. CRA has called for tenders for a single regional radio survey provider from 2016.

“The introduction of one official provider following the tender will maintain consistency across markets,” Ms Warner said.

Townsville is the eleventh survey to be released under the CRA Regional Radio Audience Measurement methodology. Previous surveys have been conducted in Wollongong, Albury and Warrnambool in NSW; Hobart in Tasmania; Swan Hill, Horsham, Hamilton and Colac in Victoria; and the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.  In some areas it has been the first survey in more than a decade and advertisers both nationally and locally have responded positively to the research.

Regional General Manager Matt Chapman from Grant Broadcasters said: “It is very satisfying to finally have a survey done in this fantastic market.  Having been in Townsville for eight years with Zinc 100.7 and 106.3 FM myself, it will be great for our staff and clients to know where we have come from and where we are today.”

The Townsville regional survey results will be available from 10am AEDST on the Radio It's A Love Thing website.
