First radio survey for Cairns since 2003

Commercial radio stations in Cairns will have fresh insights on their listening audiences when radio ratings for the competitive Far North Queensland market are released today for the first time since 2003.

Music stations Hot FM, Star 102.7, Sea FM Cairns and 4CA are among the stations that serve the region.

Joan Warner, chief executive officer of industry body Commercial Radio Australia, said radio stations in Cairns had undergone change in recent times with new branding, new on-air teams and new studios to ensure they kept pace with their listeners.

“The first station to start broadcasting in Cairns was 4CA, which went to air in 1936, so Cairns has had a long history with radio, and the industry has grown and evolved alongside the city itself,” she said.

“Regional radio provides an important service to local communities, and the new ratings information will make stations in Cairns more competitive as they adapt to new technologies and changing listener needs.”

The survey in Cairns is one of 25 regional radio surveys to be conducted across Australia in 2016 as regional broadcasters move to lift their profile amid increasing competition.

The survey involved 1200 respondents and was conducted by Xtra Research.

The survey results will be available from 10am AEST on the Radio It’s A Love Thing website.
