Finalists announced for Brian White journalism scholarship

Commercial Radio Australia today announced the finalists for the Brian White Scholarship, which gives one student the chance to kickstart their journalism career and gain experience in Australia’s biggest radio newsrooms.

Five of the 10 finalists are from NSW - Isabel Everett (The University of Newcastle), Alix Waugh (Macleay College), Rachel Holdsworth (Charles Sturt University), Isobel Rushe (University of Technology Sydney) and Jarrod Melmeth (University of Newcastle).  Four are from Western Australia’s Edith Cowan University - Elliott Chipper, Samantha Goerling, Tom Durkin and Danica Lamb and one is from Victoria; Naseem Radmehr (Deakin University).

As part of the final selection process, the finalists will attend a one-day workshop in Sydney on May 24 at the SCA Rooftop, where they will gain feedback and insight from commercial radio news directors; Deborah Clay (Australian Radio Network), Michelle Stephenson (NOVA Entertainment), Erin Maher (Macquarie Media) and Natasha Jobson (Southern Cross Austereo).

The successful student will receive an eight-week paid internship, working across Macquarie Media, SCA, ARN and Nova in either Sydney or Melbourne, with travel and accommodation included if they live outside these cities.

“All of the finalists should be very proud of their achievement. We look forward to seeing them at the workshop where they will participate in a range of newsroom focused tasks to determine who will be awarded the scholarship,” said Commercial Radio Australia chief executive officer Joan Warner.

The scholarship is named after legendary broadcaster Brian White, commercial radio’s first cadet journalist, who went on to cover wars in Vietnam and the Middle East, authored a book on politics and the media, served as general manager of 3AW in Melbourne and chaired the Fitzroy Football Club.

The previous two winners of the scholarship, Kamin Gock, who studied at Charles Sturt University, and Rachel Storer, from Newcastle University, both successfully went on to full-time jobs in broadcast media.

The winner will be announced on May 30 and the work placement will begin in July.
