National Conference 2018 - Today's Workplace in a #metoo World

CRA recently ran a presentation at the National Conference on the prevalence and issues surrounding sexual harassment in the workplace. The presentation highlighted key findings from a recently released survey by the Human Rights Commission on sexual harassment in the workplace. The survey found that 33% of respondents had experienced sexual harassment in their last 5 years at work. Furthermore, it found that incidence was 81% in the Information,Media & Telecommunications industries.

Casual Conversion Clauses in Industrial Awards - from October 2018

The Fairwork Commission recently varied all industrial awards to include a provision giving long term, regular casuals the opportunity to seek a transfer to permanent employment. An employer may refuse such a request, where it has reasonable business grounds. Whilst the awards have been changed, it does not come into real effect until 1 October 2019, as the casual employee must have served a 12 month qualifying period.

Industry Training Needs Survey 2018

Earlier this year, Station Managers and other key industry people were asked to share their views on a number of issues affecting the industry, including the availability of skilled people to join and progress through the industry and suitability of existing industry training courses to meet the needs of industry.

Some highlighted results included:

  • a shortage of available suitably skilled announcers to join the industry, particularly in country areas;
  • shortages in available technical staff, with accute shortages in RF broadcast / transmission skills; and
  • sales was the most difficult category to attract and progress skilled people within the industry.

Minimum Wage Review 2018 

The Fair Work Commission has set a new National Minimum Wage of $719.20 per week, which represents an increase of 3.5%.  The decision also affects all industrial awards minimum wage rates. The decision takes effect from the first full pay period from 1 July 2018.

CRA has recently reviewed and updated information regarding the various tertiary courses available for the radio industry. Whilst the information is not exhaustive, it provides extensive details of most of the courses available to either people seeking to enter the industry or for existing staff seeking to enhance their skills.
