Industry Broadcasting Engineers - List of Engineering Technical Specialists

CRA has drawn together a list of engineering experts, from current and retired industry engineers, who are available to provide consulting support to networks across a range of broadcast engineering issues. Recent industry surveys have highlighted industry skills gaps in areas such as:

  • Broadcast transmission,
  • IP networking,
  • Studio & audio, &
  • Diagnostic - problem solving.

The below list of individuals collectively have extensive experience across all areas of radio broadcasting, including the identfied industry skills gaps. They have offered to provide support services either  on a One off or ongoing basis. Commercial arrangements (fees) to negotiated with the selected specialist.

Peter Smerdon
Major areas of specialisation/ expertise
  • Relationship of Engineering to the rest of the station/network - fostering cooperation and respect with Sales, Programming, News and Management (and the outside world).
  • Preventative maintenance, and orderly equipment replacement (budgeting and budget submission process).
  • Concepts of redundancy in system design, and the trade-offs involved.
  • Safe working practices (RFR exposure, high voltage working, safe climbing etc.)
  • Standby Power Plant and other building services (air-con, UPS, phone systems etc).
Major projects or accomplishments
  • Technology supported spans Byer/Rola/Otari/Studer tape recorders,
  • Sparta/Spotmaster/CEI cart machines, AWA/MTE/PKE/Ward Beck/Elan consoles and associated contemporary studio equipment,
  • Multi-track production equipment (from Ampex AG440-4, through Studer A800-24 to Sonic Solutions then ProTools), Wizard and NexGen computer playout systems,
  • Outside Broadcasts (large and small - from the classic card table and a Hotline, to full-blown audience-driven sports panel events),
  • valve & solid-state AM transmitters, AM directional antenna systems (and a small number of FM transmitters and antennas).

  • Second in Charge for the Radio Australia Studio building complex at East Burwood. Tested and commissioned 23 studios.
  • Designed, built and tested all of the studio equipment for 3LO/3AR when Broadcast House was being upgraded in the 80's.
  • Installation of Nautel LT series transmitter and rf plumbing at 102.5 Deniliquin and 102.1 Mt Stanley.
  • ABC Design team member for the Ultimo building.
  • Installed CDMA trial sites in Malaysia for Telecom Malaysia

  • Telecom Broadcasting (SRRN Designing of TV and Radio transmitter sites for the second regional radio network ABC/SBC) (1989-1991)
  • Telstra Mobiles, design engineer in charge of the rollout and capacity planning Mobile Telephone Network. 1991-1998.
  • Assembly and Testing supervisor with RFS Kilsyth. In charge for the department building and testing all mobile and broadcast antenna and rf systems. 1998-2000
  • RTI Consultant for SE Asia, installing and repairing CDMA Repeaters, 2000- 2002.
